Tasting the delicious (and expensive!) Okunomatsu sake
Title: BYOS (Bring Your Own Sake) Tasting at Sushi Central
Location: Sushi Central
Description: It’s a little last minute, but we hope you will be able to join us for a BYOS (Bring your own sake) tasting happy hour at Sushi Central. All you have to do is bring a 720ml bottle (wine bottle size) of sake, and be ready to eat some great sushi and share your bottle with fellow sake enthusiasts!
I’m very excited to report that we will be tasting my favorite sake, Sakura Muromachi…which is not available in the U.S.! I tried it at the Joy of Sake tasting a few years ago, and it was by far my favorite of the hundred or so sake I tried that night. A big thank you to DC, who we met at our Robata-ya happy hour event a few weeks ago…he was kind enough to bring a bottle back with him from Japan last week.
About Sushi Central:
Review from Metromix – “At Sushi Central, you get an all-inclusive experience—an expert sushi chef/owner, a cozy environment and a menu that appeals to both fanatical raw-fish eaters and timid California roll munchers. But why just eat sushi when you can learn how to prepare it? In addition to catering posh L.A. parties—with in-home sushi bars—Chef Phillip Y…

Start Time: 6:30
Two of the sakes we tasted at Robata-Ya during our last visit.
We found a great little restaurant yesterday on Sawtelle Blvd. in West LA, with an amazing happy hour – 50% off almost all bottles of sake (including one of my favorites, Dassai), pitchers of beer, and jidori chicken robata skewers from 5:30pm – 7:30pm. I’ve yet to find a better deal on sake in this city…and during this recession, it’s hard to pass up a great deal! The robata skewers were delicious, and are almost as good as Nanbankan (for those that know me, Nanbankan is my favorite restaurant, so that is saying a LOT!) So, for our first meet-up event, let’s break the ice and get to know each other over a few glasses of sake at Robata-ya. Check out the LA times review for more info on the restaurant, which opened last fall: http://www.latimes.com/features/food/la-fo-review10-2008dec10,1,2135127.story
The sake we plan on drinking are:
- Dassai 50 – Junmai Ginjo, Yamaguchi Prefecture, SMV +3, Acidity 1.4, Light & Smooth
- Kubota Hekijyo – Junmai Daiginjo, Niigata Prefecture, SMV +3, Acidity 1.5, Tight & Clean
- Shirakabe gura – TYPE: Tokubetsu Junmai, Kyoto Prefecture, SMV +2, Acidity 1.6, Clean & Ricey
The cost will be about $20 – $25 per person for sake (which gets you about 540ml of sake – 3/4 of a bottle), and $10 – $15 for food – but you have to be there before happy hour ends at 7:30! Hope to see you there!
